The Abyssinian is one of the oldest known cat breeds, believed to resemble the cats worshipped in ancient Egypt. Despite their name, modern Abyssinians likely originated from cats brought to Britain from Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean coast in the 19th century. The breed was named after Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia) following a British military expedition. A cat named Zula, exhibited at the Crystal Palace cat show in 1871, is considered the first documented Abyssinian. The breed nearly disappeared during both World Wars but was revived through careful breeding programs in Britain and the United States.
