Beagles have ancient roots, with small hound dogs existing in England before the Roman invasion in 55 BC. The breed was refined in England during the 1800s for hunting rabbits and hares. Their name may derive from the Gaelic word "beag," meaning "small." They gained massive American popularity partly due to Snoopy. Today they are widely used as detection dogs at airports by the "Beagle Brigade."
