British Shorthairs are one of the oldest recognized cat breeds, descended from cats brought to Britain by Roman invaders around 2,000 years ago. These Roman working cats interbred with local wild cats, developing into a sturdy, adaptable breed. They were first formally bred and shown in the late 19th century by Harrison Weir, known as the "Father of the Cat Fancy," who showcased them at the first cat show in 1871. The breed nearly went extinct during World War II but was revived through careful breeding programs, sometimes using Persians and other shorthair breeds.
