Budgerigars, commonly known as "budgies" or "parakeets," are native to Australia, where they have lived for millions of years in the dry interior regions. Aboriginal Australians were the first to interact with these birds, and the name "budgerigar" may derive from an Aboriginal word meaning "good food." They were first brought to Europe in 1840 by ornithologist John Gould and quickly became fashionable pets. By the 1920s, they were the most popular caged bird in the world. Budgies remain the third most popular pet globally, after dogs and cats.
