Dachshunds, meaning "badger dog" in German, were developed over 300 years ago in Germany to hunt badgers. Their elongated bodies and short legs allowed them to enter badger setts. Miniature Dachshunds were later bred to hunt smaller prey like rabbits. The breed became a symbol of Germany and was beloved by European royalty, including Queen Victoria.
