The German Shepherd was developed in Germany in the late 1800s by Captain Max von Stephanitz, who sought to create the ideal herding dog. He purchased a dog named Horand von Grafrath and established the first breed club in 1899. After World War I, returning soldiers praised the breed's intelligence and bravery, leading to massive popularity. The breed became synonymous with police, military, and search-and-rescue work worldwide.
