The Golden Retriever was developed in Scotland during the mid-19th century by Lord Tweedmouth. He crossed a Yellow Retriever with the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel, along with Irish Setter and Bloodhound bloodlines. The breed was originally created to retrieve waterfowl during hunting parties, with a soft mouth that could carry birds without damage. They gained AKC recognition in 1925 and have since become one of the world's most beloved family dogs.
