Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are native to the freshwater streams and rivers of northeastern South America, including Venezuela, Barbados, Trinidad, and Guyana. They were first described by Wilhelm Peters in 1859 and later named after Robert John Lechmere Guppy, who sent specimens to the British Museum in 1866. They were introduced worldwide in the early 20th century for mosquito control, as they eat mosquito larvae. Today they are one of the most popular aquarium fish due to their hardiness, beautiful colors, and prolific breeding habits. The famous guppy biologist W.C.H. Darwin used them extensively in evolutionary studies.
