Siberian Huskies were originally bred by the Chukchi people of northeastern Siberia as sled dogs and companions. Developed over thousands of years to pull light loads over frozen distances. They gained worldwide fame in 1925 when a sled team led by a Husky named Balto delivered diphtheria antitoxin across 674 miles of Alaskan wilderness to save the town of Nome. A statue of Balto stands in New York's Central Park.
