Labrador Retrievers trace their origins to the island of Newfoundland, Canada, where they were known as St. John's Water Dogs. These dogs helped fishermen retrieve nets and catches from icy waters. In the early 1800s, English nobles brought them to England for waterfowl retrieving. The Earl of Malmesbury is credited with naming them "Labradors." They have been the AKC's most registered breed for over 30 consecutive years.
