Maine Coons are native to the state of Maine in the United States and are one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. Folklore claims they descended from raccoons (biologically impossible) or from cats brought by Marie Antoinette during her escape from France. The truth is likely that they descended from domestic cats and short-haired cats brought by early settlers, developing their large size and thick coats as adaptation to harsh New England winters. They were popular show cats in the late 1800s but declined in the early 20th century when more exotic breeds arrived. The breed made a comeback and is now the third most popular pedigreed cat in the world.
