Persian cats are one of the oldest known cat breeds, with records dating back to the 1600s in Persia (modern-day Iran). Italian traders brought them to Europe in the 17th century, where they quickly became favorites of European nobility. Queen Victoria herself owned two blue Persians. The breed was one of the first to be exhibited at the world's first cat show held at London's Crystal Palace in 1871. They were imported to the United States in the late 1800s and have consistently ranked as the most popular pedigreed cat breed in North America.
