Russian Blue cats are believed to have originated in the Russian port of Arkhangelsk (Archangel), and were brought to Europe by sailors in the 1860s. They were first shown at London's Crystal Palace cat show in 1875 as "Archangel Cats." The breed gained favor with Russian Czars and European royalty for their elegant appearance and gentle disposition. After World War II, the breed was nearly extinct, and breeders in Scandinavia, Britain, and the United States worked to revive them, sometimes crossing with Siamese and British Shorthair cats to strengthen the gene pool. By the 1960s, the modern Russian Blue was firmly established.
