The Shiba Inu is Japan's oldest and smallest native dog breed, with origins dating back to 300 BC. The name "Shiba" may mean "brushwood" (referring to the terrain) or "small" in a local dialect. They were originally used to flush birds and small game from dense underbrush. During World War II, the breed nearly went extinct. After the war, breeding programs in remote mountain areas preserved the lineage. The first Shiba Inu was imported to the United States in 1954.
