Siamese cats are one of the oldest naturally occurring cat breeds, originating from Thailand (formerly Siam). They were treasured by Thai royalty and Buddhist monks, appearing in ancient manuscripts called the "Tamra Maew" (Cat Book Poems) dating back to the 14th century. They were first exhibited at London's Crystal Palace cat show in 1871. The breed gained a royal following when Queen Victoria was gifted a Siamese cat. Their distinctive "pointed" color pattern is caused by a temperature-sensitive enzyme β€” cooler body parts develop darker coloring.
