Despite their name suggesting an Egyptian origin, the modern Sphynx cat was developed in Toronto, Canada, in 1966 when a domestic cat gave birth to a hairless kitten named Prune. Prune was bred back to his mother, producing more hairless kittens. The breed was initially called the "Canadian Hairless." The name Sphynx was later adopted due to their resemblance to the ancient Egyptian Sphinx statue. The breed's hairlessness is caused by a natural genetic mutation. Early breeding efforts faced challenges, but by the 1990s, the breed was established with a healthy, diverse gene pool.
